The opening speech of the LED 2010 was given by Mathijs Bouman. Bouman is a journalist and economist. After his promotion in 1998 he worked as a researcher and lecturer at various Dutch universities. After that he went into journalism and worked as deputy chief of  FEM Business. Between 2003 and 2005, he worked at De Nederlandsche Bank.

Debater: Alexander Rinnooy Kan

In the debate that took place in the afternoon, Alexander Rinnooy Kan was up against Arjo Klamer. Alexander Rinnooy Kan (1949) who studied mathematics in Leiden and Econometrics in Amsterdam, has worked for one year at the Spectrum Encyclopedia (editor mathematics) and for three years at Delft University.

Arjo Klamer currently is professor of the Economics of Art and Culture at Erasmus University and dean of Academia Vitae. He studied Econometrics at the University of Amsterdam, has worked on a four-sectors model for the Dutch economy (under supervision of Wim Driehuis), received his doctorate in Economics from the same university and acquired his PhD at Duke University in the US.

Debate leader: Peter van der Geer

Mr drs Peter van der Geer is a classicist and jurist, who studied in Leiden, Cambridge and at Harvard University. He used to live and work in Leiden, Schiedam, Breda, Brussels, Amsterdam and Haarlemmermeer.

According to radio 1, he’s the only true professional debater the Netherlands has. He is the co-founder of ‘Het Lagerhuis’, a debate program on VARA and is a regular guest on radio and television shows.
